Craig Martin replied 2 months ago Thanks Lucian. If people are interested in the issue, keep an eye on the news on August 15-16, a couple of weeks from now. Aug. 15., the anniversary of the surrender of Japan, is when all the right-wing groups converge on Yasukuni to express their veneration for the war dead. Every year there is great national debate over whether the Prime Minister will/should attend, the significance of war criminals being interned there, etc. There are often some great shots of the proceedings, some of tiny tots all dressed up in Imperial Japanese military uniforms... Tracy Martin wrote 3 months ago Wonderful shot Craig, when I look at this it's hard not to wonder what their lives were like prior to war. Craig Martin replied 3 months ago Thanks Tracy. It was actually your picture of the newspaper photos in the window that made me think of submitting this - for it is a low-quality snap taken with a point and shoot rather hurridly, since cameras are forbidden in the shrine. But when I saw yours, I got to thinking that maybe the story this shot tells would appeal to people. It is pretty surreal in this part of the museum, as there are these pictures, almost floor-to -cieling and wall-to-wall, some dating back to the Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War at the turn of the last century. |
